Rachael + Sam: A Madison Lakeside Park Wedding

RachaelSamuelBlog-1024.jpg

On a beautiful and windy Spring day in Burrows Park, Rachael + Sam said “I Do”

I love small and intimate weddings, and Racheal + Sam’s wedding day was just that. Small, intimate, and full of life and love. As most wedding days do, it started off a little stressful, but everything came together by the main event, which of course was the wedding vows!

Rachael + Sam had a wonderfully short and sweet wedding ceremony (where Rachael was holding their youngest) and then were able to relax and celebrate with their closest friends and family and enjoy the weather! Just what a wedding day should be!

Help me with Rachael + Sam a big congrats, and enjoy the wedding photos!

-Sam

Alisha + Nathaniel: A Black Earth Rainy Day Micro Wedding

AlishaNateWedding-1150.jpg

Alisha + Nate may have had rain on their wedding day…

But like everything else about getting married during a pandemic, they rolled with it!

Alisha + Nate met during college through mutual friends, but they actually fell for each other while playing trivia together (Remember trivia? And places? And other people?) and like many of our clients over the last year, they had originally planned on a larger wedding day, but when COVID still wasn’t over in early 2021, they made the decision to have a small ceremony with immediate family this year at Nate’s parent’s house in Black Earth, WI, and then celebrate with a bigger crowd in 2022.

The wedding day was simple and lovely and in addition to immediate family, the wedding day was also attended by Alisha + Nate’s dog, Laverne. After a short and sweet ceremony, we went outside with some umbrellas for a bit to take full photo-advantage of the drizzle (I love rainy day wedding pics) and before we knew it, it was time for them to head to a celebratory dinner!

Enjoy the wedding pics of these two love birds, and join me in congratulating them on their wedding! I can’t wait for more celebrations with these two and their families in 2022!

Terry + Leah: A Rainbow Wedding at the Goodman Community Center

TerryLeahBlog-1042.jpg

Terry + Leah had a happy and colorful wedding day, complete with Ring Bear!

Terry + Leah, like a lot of folks getting married during the pandemic, decided to do things a little differently on their wedding day. They had a very intimate ceremony in March, and are planning a bigger reception celebration in October.

Small and intimate doesn’t mean boring though, and Terry + Leah’s wedding day was fun and joyful, and full of little touches (beautiful lights and rainbow accents and so many sequins!!!!) and big touches, like having a Ring Bear (I still giggle about this every time I think about it)!

Congratulations, Terry + Leah, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you for round two in October!

Erin + Matt: A Halloween Micro Wedding

ErinMattWedding-1539.jpg

Mad Scientist Meets Library Science at this Halloween Micro Wedding

Erin + Matt had originally planned for a much larger wedding at the Madison Central Library downtown, but like so many weddings planned for this year, COVID-19 had other ideas.

Instead, these two shifted gears to plan the sweetest Halloween micro wedding ever, with safety for their guests & vendors being top of mind. I LOVE the mad scientist meets library science decor they went with, and how they had 100+ guests join them via Zoom to share in the celebrations!

Enjoy these photos of Erin + Matt’s awesome wedding day, and check out their engagement session here.

6 Reasons You Should Have a Micro Wedding

HeatherMikeBlog-1017.jpg

We loved micro weddings before they were cool

First of all, what are micro weddings exactly? A micro wedding is typically a wedding that is 20 guests or under.

Second of all, this post is not for you if you have spent your entire adult life, or at least your entire engagement, dreaming of throwing a giant celebratory wedding day bash with every single one of your family, friends, and casual acquaintances in tow. If that sounds like you, there’s no judgment here! We love big parties too! In fact, while my first wedding was a micro wedding, Rob and I had a reception that was so large we literally invited our three favorite clerks from our local Blockbuster Video (and they came!), which means that not only are we old AF, but that we can enjoy a big get together and the fun photo opportunities they provide as much as the next person!

That said, this post is for you if you’re a couple that cringes at the idea of a big to-do, or the idea of being the center of attention in a large crowd. This post is for couples who want to do something special to celebrate their union, but aren’t necessarily looking for the traditional trappings of a wedding day, like first dances, endless speeches and glass clinking, or big crowds. Read on to hear about 6 reasons that micro weddings are the bomb (is that still a cool thing to say?), and why you should totally consider one!

Reason #1 - Less Stressful

Even as a person who loves weddings, I can acknowledge that wedding planning is stressful as hell. There are so many moving parts, that unless you hire a wedding planner (and there are some amazing ones we can recommend), you’re looking at basically a second full-time job just to get your wedding planned and off the ground. Having a micro wedding involves considerably less (though still some) planning, and is therefore considerably less stressful!

Reason #2 - Less Planning Time

With less to plan, you can pull together your dream tiny wedding in much less time than it takes to pull together a larger gathering. That means if you want to be married in two weeks, you can make it happen! Just make sure the vendors that are important to you (such as photographers, officiant, etc.) are available for your preferred date.

Reason #3 - Less Costly

Less guests = less costly. It’s just basic math. When planning a micro wedding, even if you get pretty darn fancy about it, and even if you’re providing food (which is optional), you’re still feeding and providing refreshments for far fewer people than a traditional wedding. In addition, because of the smaller guest list, you open up a world of possibilities for venues or locations. Being able to get more creative with where your wedding is held (due to the smaller guest list) allows you to often pay much less, or potentially nothing at all, for your wedding venue, and that’s a win for your pocketbooks! Also maybe more money left over for a honeymoon or for other wedding-related things you’d like to splurge on!

Reason #4 - More Flexible

If you are planning a 120 person wedding outdoors, you are going to need a backup plan in case of inclement weather, and having access to such a backup plan that accommodates that many people is often expensive and also maybe not the experience you were hoping for. When you’re having a micro wedding, where your guest count is 20 guests or under, you have a lot more flexibility when it comes to things like inclement weather and rain day backup plans! You also have more flexibility to do things like have a weekday wedding, because there are less guests to plan around, and that can also help you save some money with some of your vendors who may offer discounts for weekday weddings, versus weekend weddings (not applicable to all vendors of course).

Reason #5 - More Time With Your Guests

Speaking of your guests, one of the biggest regrets I had from both my weddings, and one of the biggest regrets I hear from our couples, is that they feel they didn’t have enough time to spend with each of their guests, because there were so many and because the day goes by so fast! Well, micro weddings don’t necessarily make the day go by any slower, but what they do give you is the gift of more intimate and undivided time with your closest family and friends. The people who matter most to you in the entire world. Being able to spend more quality time with these special people on your wedding day is an absolute gift, and it’s one of the most amazing and joyful things about having a micro wedding.

Reason #6 - More ‘You’

The larger the wedding, frankly, the harder it seems to be to make it exactly what you want, and to make the day reflect who you are as individuals and who you are as a couple. That doesn’t mean big weddings can’t be unique and awesome, it just means you have to try pretty hard to make them so, and that it’ll likely add to your wedding day expense to do so. When you have a micro wedding, you’re stripping the wedding day down to its most important components; the two of you and your love for one another, and your absolutely closest friends and family. The day automatically becomes more ‘you’ in doing so, and you have a wonderful opportunity to go all out on small details if those are important to you, because you’re going all out for yourselves and a handful of people, versus a ballroom full of people. This is truly a gift!

So if you love the idea of a micro wedding but are on the fence, consider these reasons why you should totally, positively, absolutely go for it! We also offer special elopement and micro wedding packages to meet your needs and we absolutely adore micro weddings! Get in touch if you’d like to talk about options, and also check out this gallery of Micro weddings for inspiration!

Sam + Joe: A Nature-Filled Madison Micro Wedding

SamJoeBlog-1009.jpg

While Sam + Joe originally planned on getting married in Colorado, COVID pushed them to have a small but mighty beautiful Madison wedding ceremony in 2020, with a Colorado celebration to come in 2021!

Colorado holds a special place in the story of Sam + Joe’s relationship, as it was the first place they said “I love you”. While I can’t wait to be able to help them celebrate their union there in 2021, I am also thrilled to have been able to help them capture their 2020 wedding here in Madison.

The UW Arboretum, Willy Street, Lake Monona, and Olbrich Gardens are some of Sam + Joe’s favorite nature-y spots in Madison (yes, I know nature-y isn’t a word) and we stopped at all of them on Sam + Joe’s wedding day for photos and fun.

I love all the little details that these two worked into their wedding day, including a reference to the mountain goat who was making obnoxiously loud noises during that first “I love you” in Colorado, a tie pin with Sam’s handwriting on it, bracelets with their important relationship dates, the DIY jewelry that Sam made for herself and the bridesmaids, and a whole host of other special little ways to celebrate. Sam + Joe even got me a pin shaped like a roll of film as a thank you (which led to me needing to explain to my 12 year old what film is, and now feeling old, but at least old with a cool pin).

Help me wish Sam + Joe a hearty congratulations friends, and stay tuned for part two next year!

-Sam

Rachel + Trevor: A Sunny and Intimate Evansville Wedding

RachelTrevorWedding-1037.jpg

Rachel + Trevor had a laid-back, intimate, and kid-friendly Spring wedding and it was awesome!

When I met with Rachel before the big day, she impressed on me how excited she was about the kid-friendly nature of her upcoming wedding day, particularly given that her three kiddos, and many others would be enjoying the festivities as well. And indeed, there were legos and coloring supplies aplenty!

Rachel + Trevor had that easiness about them that I love to see in couples who are truly comfortable with one another, and truly partners in life (and parenting). They chose to walk up the aisle together, which I always see as such a powerful sign of equality, and had their children and closest friends and relatives stand up with them at the altar. There were two moments so tender they brought me to tears; One small moment during the hand-fasting ceremony in which Trevor was running his thumb over Rachel’s forearm in that kind and loving way folks do when they’re alone. The other was just following the first kiss, when Trevor comforted Rachel, during an emotional moment. Rachel’s mother passed just a few short months before the ceremony, and when the joy of a special occasion stands in sharp relief to the pain of missing a beloved family member, joy and pain can be mixed equally in those moments and that small gesture of comfort was so sweet to see.

The wedding day was lovely, real, and simply a blessing to get to capture. I am so honored to have been able to celebrate with Rachel + Trevor and their kids and friends and family. Congratulations you two!

Krystal + Jake: A Lego-Themed Madison Winter Wedding

KrystalJakeBlog-1020.jpg

Doesn’t this wedding seem wonderfully Frozen-inspired?

Krystal+Jake had a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L winter wedding day. It was cold as all get out, but so worth it, because just look at these first look photos and wedding party photos in that pretty February snow! Also, check out Krystal’s awesome use of a veil-turned-wedding-cape cuz holy smokes. <3

These two sweethearts also let us throw so much glitter at them to get that fun confetti shot, laughed and celebrated with their friends and families, and danced the night away. We loved how affectionate Krystal + Jake were with each other all day. They were so fun to photograph!

We are so honored to have been able to celebrate with Krystal+Jake, and take a look at their wedding day below!

Andrea + Adam: An Intimate and Chill Madison Wedding

AndreaAdamTeasers-1011.jpg

Great things can happen when you both swipe right…

Yep, that’s right, these two met on Tinder, and hit it off immediately. One of the things that stood out to me on their wedding day was how freaking excited they were to be marrying each other, and how pumped their kids were as well! Both Andrea + Adam have 2 kids from previously marriages, and these 4 are already thick as thieves. All 4 kids stood up with their parents as the wedding party, and part of the wedding ceremony was a little bonding ritual of sand to symbolize the blending of their newly formed family, which I loved. :) It was so sweet and meaningful it brought most of the guests to tears!

Andrea + Adam were also kind enough to indulge me in stopping by my favorite local mural (Try a Little Tenderness, the Otis Redding mural on Willy St.) and also to pop by the UW Arboretum to do some photos with the last of the fall colors.

This wedding was one of my favorites of the year, as I’m quite a fan of intimate weddings, and I’m so excited that Andrea + Adam invited me to celebrate with them! Congrats you two!

Ashley + Geoff: A fandom-themed Wedding

AshleyGeoffTeasers-1014.jpg

This spectacular DIY offbeat wedding was one-of-a-kind!

“This will be a nerd wedding!” was the warning I got from Ashley + Geoff when they first booked us, and let me tell you, they did not disappoint!

For two awesome humans who met at a zombie larp (what?!), they had the amazingly nerdy wedding you would expect, and it was glorious. Each guest table was decorated with a different ‘fandom’, from Harry Potter, to Dresden Files (yay!), to Conan the Barbarian, and everything in between. Their card holder was a hand-made sarlacc pit (complete with little skeleton bride + groom). Their cake was Star Wars and Alien themed. And the list goes on. I knew this was going to be a fun wedding!

Following the short and sweet ceremony, in which Ashley’s dad, dressed as Darth Vader, walked her down the aisle, we went to take photos inside the Cave of the Mounds, which was a first for me! I can now say I understand how to light cave shots, so that’s new and exciting! ;) Then we got to enjoy the brief reprieve from the rain and take some photos under a dark & stormy sky, which complimented Ashley’s black and white dress and black veil so damn well. I’ve never been so happy to see clouds!

You could tell everyone, including the two of them, were having a great time celebrating, and let’s face it, after the actual getting married part, that’s what a wedding is all about!

We are so happy to have been able to celebrate with Ashley + Geoff. Check out some of our favorite moments from the day, and a big congrats to these two!

Jenny + Jason: Elegant and Classy, but with Dinosaurs

JennyJasonBlog-1146.jpg

This sweet summer wedding wouldn’t have been complete without tacos, coffee bar, and, you guessed it, dinosaurs!

So Jenny + Jason met while working at Best Buy/Geek Squad, and have just about the cutest ‘meet cute’ story I’ve heard! After several weeks of not quite knowing whether or not they were flirting (haven’t we all been there?), they both figured it out when Jason asked Jenny to go with him to GenCon (a board game convention in Indianapolis, IN). From there, they were pretty much on the same page about that whole flirting business, and 6 years later, Jason proposed to Jenny at GenCon (they go every year) and she obviously said yes!

When it came to the wedding, one of the first things Jenny told me was that their theme was going to be ‘Elegant, Classy… but with Dinosaurs’ and I could not be more on board with that! Well, they sure as heck pulled it off, and managed to work in tacos and a coffee bar and then ALSO dinosaurs! (Dream clients, amiright?!) Also, Jenny’s wedding vows mentioned (consensual) butt-grabbing, which is always a plus in my book. ;)

Their day was filled with magic (and maybe one or two thousand mosquitoes, but it can’t all be perfect, right?) and was so damn fun! We had a blast telling puns, putting the little dinosaur decorations in fun poses, and eating rad food. I am so happy we got to celebrate with these two!

Ann-Marie + Yasmine: A Fancy BBQ Picnic Wedding celebration

Ann-Marie_Yasmine_Blog-1025.jpg

These two had a BBQ Picnic Wedding celebration with Fancy AF Dresses, Sock Puppets, and a Little Surprise for Guests During the First Dance!

Ann-Marie + Yasmine (Fraggle as her friends call her) originally got married in April of 2016, but have been planning a celebration of marriage event for the last year or so! They wanted a laid-back, BBQ in the park kind of wedding celebration, with good friends and family, plenty of great food, and fancy *AF* bridal gowns!

Spoiler alert: They nailed it!

In addition to some seriously stylish dresses and amazing food, these two also had some awesomely fun sock puppet kits as their party favors for guests; How cool is that?!

AND during their first dance? You guessed it, they rickrolled the hell out of everyone, and it was awesome! Particularly since I very non-ironically love the song 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

We are thrilled to have been able to celebrate the wedding of these two amazing individuals! Congrats you two!
