Lifestyle Family Portraits At Home

There is something so sweet about the realness of lifestyle family portraits in the home

Brigitta reached out about photos because she and her wife, Janine, recently celebrated their 5 year anniversary and wanted family portraits that reflected their life as it’s unfolded over these last several years. When she mentioned they wanted to do portraits at home, I was super excited, because I love in-home lifestyle family portraits! For one, lifestyle family portraits are less about getting the kids to act in ways that feel unnatural to them (sitting still for instance), and two, they’re a beautiful way to celebrate something more akin to day to day life with your family and your little ones. For Brigitta & Janine, that included their 3 kiddos, ZZ, Sagan, and Fletcher, the kids’ au pair Pertunia, and Meeko, their older doggo (3 cats not pictured, because new humans are scary - fair enough kitties, fair enough!).

The moments captured were unscripted, joyful, and most of all, reflected the beauty of everyday life for this lovely family!

Kristin + AJ: A Beautiful Downtown Micro Wedding

AJ + Kristin packed a lot of heart into a short but sweet wedding ceremony!

AJ (they/them) + Kristin (she/her) met when their friend & mutual hairdresser, Andrea (also their officiant) started a group chat to introduce them, then immediately bounced to let them take it from there. And obviously it went well, because here are their wedding photos!

The wedding ceremony at the Wisconsin State Capitol Building was beautiful, and the guest list was just the immediate family of both Kristin + AJ (check out the adorable sibling pics and the adorable accidentally matching dad tie pics below!). I love micro weddings, and this wedding was a perfect example of why they’re so special! It’s intimate, personal, and just right for couples that don’t want “a whole big thing” but do want to celebrate with their very closest friends & family.

Despite the cold, we were able to play around outside for couples photos after the ceremony, before Kristin + AJ and their whole gang headed to Harvey House for dinner.

Enjoy the photos of this perfect wedding day, and help me wish these two a big congratulations!

Stormy + Meier: A Sports Lovers' Multi-Cultural & Multi-Faith Wedding

Meier + Stormy’s wedding was a beautiful celebration of love and joy

When I was connected with Meier by a friend early last week, I was told about Stormy + Meier’s situation, which is that Stormy was not only diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer just last week, but that he was also told at that time that the cancer is terminal, and he has months to live. Based on this news, Meier + Stormy decided to book couples portraits (check them out here) and to plan a wedding in a matter of days (no small feat) to connect them together eternally, and to celebrate their connection with friends and family and their faith communities. Despite the reason these two decided to move their wedding up, this is not a story about death, it’s a story about love and joy.

During their couples session, I was awestruck by the bond these two share. The laughter, the good-natured teasing, the giggles, and the emotions. It was a beautiful day, and I was 100% correct in assuming their wedding day was going to be one to remember.

The wedding theme for these two sports lovers was “Wisconsin Badgers” (and a sea of folks decked out in Badger Red were there to cheer the couple on) and the wedding was scheduled for Sunday 2/9/2026, early enough that the couple, along with their guests, wouldn’t need to worry about missing the Super Bowl! 🏈 Their rescue pup, Jupiter “Juju”, was there to act as a ring bearer and he did such a good job, but even a dog as cute as Juju couldn’t steal the show, because Meier + Stormy were too incandescently happy for anyone to look away from them. The multi-faith Jewish & Christian wedding ceremony was a mix of serious, hilarious, and pure joy, and the celebration afterwards was just as sweet as the couple themselves.

Stormy + Meier have a beautiful and loving community supporting them, and they have each other, but the road ahead will be rough as they shift their focus to bucket lists and end of life planning. Please consider donating to the GoFundMe for Stormy + Meier, which will be used to help care for Stormy in a variety of ways during this period, but most importantly to help him realize his lifelong goal of going to Africa, allowing him feel deeply connected with his ancestors in the time he has left. Enjoy the photos of this beautiful wedding day, and help me wish these two a BIG congrats!

Stormy + Meier: Couples Portraits That Show the Resilience of Love

Stormy + Meier’s couples portraits are a study of queer & trans joy

When I was connected with Meier by a friend early last week, I was told about Stormy + Meier’s situation, which is that Stormy was not only diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer just last week, but that he was also told at that time that the cancer is terminal, and he has months to live. I can only imagine the type of grief that must come with that news, and my heart aches just thinking about it. But Stormy + Meier’s story isn’t a story about death, despite the news Stormy received, it’s a story about love and joy.

Meier told me that they and Stormy wanted to not only do couples portraits together (along with their newly rescued pup, Juju), but also that they had decided to get married in short order, to allow them to celebrate their love with their closest friends and family while it’s still possible to do so, and that they wanted photos of their multicultural and multi-faith wedding day as well. Photographers know the power of photographs of our loved ones, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why taking these types of portraits while Stormy is able to do so would be incredibly meaningful to both of them. That said, everyone handles the this type of news differently, and I wasn’t sure what mood to expect during our couples portraits. Whether things would feel shy, or somber, or something else entirely. It turns out, something else entirely was right.

I was amazed by the joy and love that was apparently immediately when I got to meet Stormy & Meier in person, and even before we started taking photos, I felt like I was with friends (probably because we apparently know a ton of the same people, how have I not met these two before?!).

We went from gym to office to home to outdoors, and in every setting, these two were almost giddy to be interacting together. What started off as a situationship when they first met quickly turned into something infinitely precious to both of them. As I edited these photos after the session, I kept being awestruck by how absolutely beautiful their interactions were, how much they laughed and joked and played. I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise though that folks who are trans and queer know exactly how to find joy and comfort and love even in the midst of adversity.

Stay tuned for the wedding photos from this amazing couple’s wedding celebration, and in the meantime, please consider donating to the GoFundMe for Stormy + Meier, which will be used to help care for Stormy in a variety of ways during this period, but most importantly to help him realize his lifelong goal of going to Africa, allowing him feel deeply connected with his ancestors in the time he has left. If you’d like to donate, click here.

Enjoy the photos of these two, and I’ll end with this beautiful quote: "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

Korben + Storm: A Surprise Double Proposal!

Not just one proposal, but two proposals, at this beautiful surprise engagement session!

When Korben reached out to plan his surprise proposal to Storm, and explained that he had made a choose your own adventure scavenger hunt, ending with a proposal at the Wisconsin State Capitol Building (even hand-making 4 different rings for Storm to choose from in true choose-your-own-adventure style), I was so excited to celebrate with these two, but after Korben’s proposal (Storm said yes!) Storm had a surprise of his own for Korben, which was proposing inside the Capitol Building! Friends and family all helped this proposal go smoothly and a few were even there to cheer the couple on! This was such a joyful and beautiful (if insanely cold) day and I am so happy for these two! Help me wish Korben + Storm a BIG congratulations!

Alex + David: A Late Fall Engagement Session

David + Alex (and their adorable puppies) had a beautiful late fall engagement session!

It was cold as heck, so we split our time between Picnic Point with the dogs and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (sadly no puppies allowed there) and were able to beat the cold quite well and get some beautiful photos to celebrate their engagement! Help me wish a big congratulations to these two, and we can’t wait for their wedding next year!

Family Portraits at the Studio

We love co-parenting wins!

This family is made up of ex-spouses and their two kiddos, Leo & Adam, and being a person who runs a business and co-parents with my ex-spouse, I’m always so happy to see co-parenting situations where folks are putting the kids first and still working in positive family experiences, like these adorable family portraits with both of the kids’ moms! Enjoy these sweet and fun photos, taken in our studio on Madison’s East side!

Ash + Sarah: A Beautiful Fall Anniversary Portrait Session

What do you do when you had a pandemic wedding and no couples photos?

You schedule an anniversary portrait session, just like Ash + Sarah! These two had a beautiful, crisp Fall day for their portraits at Pope Farm Conservancy, and we could not have asked for better weather or more beautiful surroundings! The sun was brilliant, the lighting was dreamy, and most importantly of all, Sarah + Ash were adorable and in love, which always makes for the best pictures!

Happy anniversary to these two!

Sydney + Mackenzie: Couples Portraits at Appleberry Farm

Alba + Erika: A Laid Back Bilingual Backyard Wedding

Erika + Alba’s wedding was not only gorgeous, it was also their dog Stella’s 10th birthday!

It was obviously very kind of Stella to share her special day with her moms, and what a day! The weather was perfect, the decor lush, and there were small multicultural elements to the day that I absolutely loved, including lots of ceramic bulls (see how many you can spot)!

The wedding ceremony itself was bilingual, as Alba + Erika used both Spanish and English to communicate their vows to one another. The ceremony was short, but oh so sweet, and was immediately followed by a toast from Erika + Alba to their guests, but also very importantly, their fur baby Stella on the occasion of her 10th birthday! She was too busy rooting around in the garden to pay much attention to the toast, but got her fill of love, pets, and sunshine throughout the day!

After the guests departed for the Muskellounge for the wedding reception, we took some time for couples portraits, including photos of these two digging up a bottle of Wild Turkey that they’d buried in Erika’s mom’s garden (I honestly don’t know why it was buried, but I’ve decided to make up increasingly implausible stories in my head about it for the rest of my life), and photos of the two newlyweds and their girl Stella!

I can’t believe how lovely their wedding day was, and I am so happy to have been able to celebrate with these two! Help me wish Alba + Erika a BIG congratulations (and a great big happy birthday to Stella as well)!
