Stormy + Meier: Couples Portraits That Show the Resilience of Love

Stormy + Meier’s couples portraits are a study of queer & trans joy

When I was connected with Meier by a friend early last week, I was told about Stormy + Meier’s situation, which is that Stormy was not only diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer just last week, but that he was also told at that time that the cancer is terminal, and he has months to live. I can only imagine the type of grief that must come with that news, and my heart aches just thinking about it. But Stormy + Meier’s story isn’t a story about death, despite the news Stormy received, it’s a story about love and joy.

Meier told me that they and Stormy wanted to not only do couples portraits together (along with their newly rescued pup, Juju), but also that they had decided to get married in short order, to allow them to celebrate their love with their closest friends and family while it’s still possible to do so, and that they wanted photos of their multicultural and multi-faith wedding day as well. Photographers know the power of photographs of our loved ones, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why taking these types of portraits while Stormy is able to do so would be incredibly meaningful to both of them. That said, everyone handles the this type of news differently, and I wasn’t sure what mood to expect during our couples portraits. Whether things would feel shy, or somber, or something else entirely. It turns out, something else entirely was right.

I was amazed by the joy and love that was apparently immediately when I got to meet Stormy & Meier in person, and even before we started taking photos, I felt like I was with friends (probably because we apparently know a ton of the same people, how have I not met these two before?!).

We went from gym to office to home to outdoors, and in every setting, these two were almost giddy to be interacting together. What started off as a situationship when they first met quickly turned into something infinitely precious to both of them. As I edited these photos after the session, I kept being awestruck by how absolutely beautiful their interactions were, how much they laughed and joked and played. I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise though that folks who are trans and queer know exactly how to find joy and comfort and love even in the midst of adversity.

Stay tuned for the wedding photos from this amazing couple’s wedding celebration, and in the meantime, please consider donating to the GoFundMe for Stormy + Meier, which will be used to help care for Stormy in a variety of ways during this period, but most importantly to help him realize his lifelong goal of going to Africa, allowing him feel deeply connected with his ancestors in the time he has left. If you’d like to donate, click here.

Enjoy the photos of these two, and I’ll end with this beautiful quote: "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

Angela + Kevin: Treehouse Anniversary Portraits in Pepin, WI

Kevin + Angela celebrated their anniversary at the beautiful pepin treehouse in pepin, WI

The session was full of snuggles, sweetness, and winter wonderland snow, as these two celebrated 20 years together! I love couples sessions (obviously), but I particularly love celebrating anniversaries with couples. So many folks have no professional photos taken of them since their wedding day (and sometimes not even from that day), and so to get to celebrate a lasting bond between couples, and make sure they have beautiful pictures documenting their love and longevity, is such a privilege. Help me wish Angela + Kevin a big congratulations on 20 years!

Erika + Bryan: A Sweet Couple's Session at the Studio

Erika + Bryan’s portraits were so sweet and fun!

Erika shared with me that neither of them really like having their photos taken (I hear that a lot!), so I’m extra honored to be trusted with their portraits! We got to have some good laughs, got some beautiful photos, and next time around I’m encouraging bringing Bigfoot masks for the last few photos just to get weird with it! Enjoy the photos of this great couple!

Mariela + James: An Idyllic Fall Engagement Session at the UW Arboretum

Mariela + James are planning for a california wedding, but wanted a wisconsin engagement session

And I feel like around Madison at least, there are few places that embody the beauty of Wisconsin than the UW Arboretum in Fall! Despite the Fall colors not being out in full force yet (such strange weather we’ve had this Fall so far!), the golden hour light lit everything up with a beautiful glow, including these two love birds. We could not have asked for a more perfect setting or weather!

Help me wish Mariela + James a BIG congratulations on their engagement, and enjoy the beautiful photos!

Ash + Sarah: A Beautiful Fall Anniversary Portrait Session

What do you do when you had a pandemic wedding and no couples photos?

You schedule an anniversary portrait session, just like Ash + Sarah! These two had a beautiful, crisp Fall day for their portraits at Pope Farm Conservancy, and we could not have asked for better weather or more beautiful surroundings! The sun was brilliant, the lighting was dreamy, and most importantly of all, Sarah + Ash were adorable and in love, which always makes for the best pictures!

Happy anniversary to these two!

Sydney + Mackenzie: Couples Portraits at Appleberry Farm

These two had a private wedding ceremony but wanted to get couples portraits taken to celebrate!

The spot their picked (Appleberry Farm in Cross Plains, WI) was perfect and so damn pretty you would not believe it (I think I’ve found my new apple-picking spot for Fall)! Enjoy the photos of this sweet couple, and help me wish them a big congratulations on their wedding!

Kyle + Zoie: Engagement Portraits at Tenney Park

Tenney Park had the perfect late fall vibes for zoie + kyle’s engagement portraits!

The couple lives within walking distance of Tenney Park braved the cold and windy weather for these sweet portraits! I love how the leaves being mostly gone lent a sort of spooky vibe to some of the photos, and how gorgeous the little lake is as a backdrop! Help me wish these two a big congratulations on their engagement!

Hanna + Kait: A Picnic Point Engagement Session

Hanna + Kait have been to picnic point exactly three times

The first time was their very first date back in the early days of the Pandemic. The second was when Hanna tricked Kait into going to Picnic Point using subterfuge so that Hanna could propose to Kait at the same spot they had their first date. And the third was when we went there this week to take engagement photos!

Though they warned me ahead of time that neither of them has ever had professional photos taken, I could tell immediately these two were pros already, because look at how freaking adorable they are in front of the camera! They are so sweet and loving with each other, and it was an absolute joy to spend time with them!

We can’t wait to celebrate with these two next year when they tie the knot!

River + Aaron: A Spring Time UW Arboretum Engagement Session

River and their partner Aaron were hoping for spring flowers, and the UW Arboretum delivered up pure spring time gorgeousness!

We played around in some of my favorite areas of the Arboretum, including the evergreen area, and by all the blooming trees and bushes closer to the visitor center, River + Aaron tied for Rock, Paper, Scissors, and we practiced some badass middle-school dance moves. All in all, a perfect engagement session on a perfect day!

Congrats to River + Aaron on their engagement!

Chloe + Moose Couples Photos At Westmorland Park

Chloe + Moose had a couples session with their dogs, Tia and Toast, to celebrate their elopement, and then we finished the evening at Westmorland Park

These two chose to elope, and are planning to have a small celebration in September with friends and family, but wanted to do a couples session to celebrate their marriage! You know you’re having a good session when at least one of you is singing Aerosmith’s “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”. (Okay, it was me, but I wasn’t the one who brought it up this time!) I can’t wait for their September wedding celebration, but in the meantime, enjoy the photos of these two (and their doggos) and help me wish them a big congratulations!

Malia + Eric: An Intimate Wedding Celebration at the UW Arboretum

Malia + Eric had to postpone their wedding several times due to COVID, and eventually decided to have a small, intimate ceremony in 2021, and then a couples portrait session in their wedding attire this year

The UW Arboretum is one of my all time favorite places for photos, and with the gorgeous greenery, brilliant skies, and beautiful flowers, it did not disappoint, but even the arboretum was no match for how sharp Malia + Eric looked in their wedding attire! We had a great time walking around the arboretum taking photos and enjoying such a lovely spring day.

Congrats to Malia + Eric, and enjoy the photos of this lovely couple!
