Stormy + Meier: Couples Portraits That Show the Resilience of Love

Stormy + Meier’s couples portraits are a study of queer & trans joy

When I was connected with Meier by a friend early last week, I was told about Stormy + Meier’s situation, which is that Stormy was not only diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer just last week, but that he was also told at that time that the cancer is terminal, and he has months to live. I can only imagine the type of grief that must come with that news, and my heart aches just thinking about it. But Stormy + Meier’s story isn’t a story about death, despite the news Stormy received, it’s a story about love and joy.

Meier told me that they and Stormy wanted to not only do couples portraits together (along with their newly rescued pup, Juju), but also that they had decided to get married in short order, to allow them to celebrate their love with their closest friends and family while it’s still possible to do so, and that they wanted photos of their multicultural and multi-faith wedding day as well. Photographers know the power of photographs of our loved ones, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why taking these types of portraits while Stormy is able to do so would be incredibly meaningful to both of them. That said, everyone handles the this type of news differently, and I wasn’t sure what mood to expect during our couples portraits. Whether things would feel shy, or somber, or something else entirely. It turns out, something else entirely was right.

I was amazed by the joy and love that was apparently immediately when I got to meet Stormy & Meier in person, and even before we started taking photos, I felt like I was with friends (probably because we apparently know a ton of the same people, how have I not met these two before?!).

We went from gym to office to home to outdoors, and in every setting, these two were almost giddy to be interacting together. What started off as a situationship when they first met quickly turned into something infinitely precious to both of them. As I edited these photos after the session, I kept being awestruck by how absolutely beautiful their interactions were, how much they laughed and joked and played. I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise though that folks who are trans and queer know exactly how to find joy and comfort and love even in the midst of adversity.

Stay tuned for the wedding photos from this amazing couple’s wedding celebration, and in the meantime, please consider donating to the GoFundMe for Stormy + Meier, which will be used to help care for Stormy in a variety of ways during this period, but most importantly to help him realize his lifelong goal of going to Africa, allowing him feel deeply connected with his ancestors in the time he has left. If you’d like to donate, click here.

Enjoy the photos of these two, and I’ll end with this beautiful quote: "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

Angela + Kevin: Treehouse Anniversary Portraits in Pepin, WI

Kevin + Angela celebrated their anniversary at the beautiful pepin treehouse in pepin, WI

The session was full of snuggles, sweetness, and winter wonderland snow, as these two celebrated 20 years together! I love couples sessions (obviously), but I particularly love celebrating anniversaries with couples. So many folks have no professional photos taken of them since their wedding day (and sometimes not even from that day), and so to get to celebrate a lasting bond between couples, and make sure they have beautiful pictures documenting their love and longevity, is such a privilege. Help me wish Angela + Kevin a big congratulations on 20 years!

Erika + Bryan: A Sweet Couple's Session at the Studio

Erika + Bryan’s portraits were so sweet and fun!

Erika shared with me that neither of them really like having their photos taken (I hear that a lot!), so I’m extra honored to be trusted with their portraits! We got to have some good laughs, got some beautiful photos, and next time around I’m encouraging bringing Bigfoot masks for the last few photos just to get weird with it! Enjoy the photos of this great couple!

Lena + Andrew: An Art Museum Engagement Session

The Chazen Art Museum was the perfect backdrop for Lena + Andrew’s engagement portraits

The soft, warm colors, the skylights and dark corners, the love artists put into their art mirroring the love these two have for each other… the whole session was absolutely beautiful and unique! Also peep the adorable “strike a pose” moment with my favorite sculpture at Chazen; the giant lounging hare! Enjoy the photos of this sweet engagement session, and congrats to Lena + Andrew!

Goodman Center TEENworks Senior Portraits

It’s no secret that I love the Goodman Community Center

So when I was asked to do senior portraits for their TEENworks program, of course the answer was yes! It was awesome getting to meet each of these seniors and hear about what’s coming next for them, and I loved how all of them had great ideas for their portraits, and spots that they wanted to make sure to be photographed in around the Goodman Community Centers two buildings. The teens were real troopers about how incredibly hot it was that day too! Thanks to Goodman Community Center and all of the teens who got their portraits taken for having me celebrate the next step of your journey with you!

Songs for Dad

Dad was an avid lover of music, and an amazing musician

He passed away on 12/30/2025, at the age of 69. Some of my favorite childhood memories are with my dad, listening or singing along to him playing music. These songs remind me of my dad either because he played them himself when he performed, or because we loved singing along to them when I was little, or, in the case of Morning Elvis, because they remind me of him in a deeply personal way. Music has always helped me work through grief (I think I get that from Dad), so if you’d like to walk with me, enjoy the playlist below.

Iris' Newborn Portraits

Iris’ newborn portraits were cozy and christmas-y!

Cara + Richard, Iris’ parents, welcomed Iris home in late December, and we had newborn portraits just after Christmas, so the house was decked out in all it’s Yuletide glory! We got to have a laid back, cozy newborn portrait session, with all three family members dressed in hand-knit sweaters. Even the dogs got to get their photos taken! (Hi Melba & Bundy!). Enjoy these sweet family moments, and welcome to the world, Iris!

Korben + Storm: A Surprise Double Proposal!

Not just one proposal, but two proposals, at this beautiful surprise engagement session!

When Korben reached out to plan his surprise proposal to Storm, and explained that he had made a choose your own adventure scavenger hunt, ending with a proposal at the Wisconsin State Capitol Building (even hand-making 4 different rings for Storm to choose from in true choose-your-own-adventure style), I was so excited to celebrate with these two, but after Korben’s proposal (Storm said yes!) Storm had a surprise of his own for Korben, which was proposing inside the Capitol Building! Friends and family all helped this proposal go smoothly and a few were even there to cheer the couple on! This was such a joyful and beautiful (if insanely cold) day and I am so happy for these two! Help me wish Korben + Storm a BIG congratulations!

Alex + David: A Late Fall Engagement Session

David + Alex (and their adorable puppies) had a beautiful late fall engagement session!

It was cold as heck, so we split our time between Picnic Point with the dogs and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (sadly no puppies allowed there) and were able to beat the cold quite well and get some beautiful photos to celebrate their engagement! Help me wish a big congratulations to these two, and we can’t wait for their wedding next year!

How to Build Accessibility into Your Wedding Day

We need to rethink our definition of disability

When most able-bodied people think of the word disabled, they think of people who are permanently disabled, or in a wheelchair perhaps. But that’s not the only type of disability there is, and not all disabilities are permanent. The disabled community is the only minority group that anyone could join at any time, at any age, permanently or temporarily. Even something as simple as spraining your ankle is a disability (albeit temporary) that may require accommodations (crutches, etc.).

Since at least 13% of all Americans are disabled, it’s important to talk about how you can build accessibility into your wedding day from the beginning to create a safer, more welcoming environment for all of your guests, and to “future proof” your planning in case you (or a family member or someone from your wedding party) end up injured before your wedding. Let’s dive in!

The Venue

There are lots of considerations when it comes to your venue that have an impact on accessibility. In fact, I would argue it’s the number one way weddings become inaccessible. If you’re thinking to yourself “I don’t have anyone attending who is disabled”, keep in mind that not only is that statistically unlikely, but that you yourself or someone you love could become temporarily disabled before your wedding day just by breaking a bone or spraining an ankle, which is why making accessibility a consideration ahead of time is so important.

Here are a few things to consider related to accessibility as you look at wedding venues:

  1. Ask the venue up front about their ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance, and how accessible their venue is for people with mobility issues or those who use wheelchairs.

  2. Keep an eye out for navigation concerns with your venue - you want a venue that a person in a wheelchair (or on crutches) could navigate without difficulty. This includes looking for red flags like stairs that don’t have a ramp or elevator as an alternative, large lips on doorway floors that a wheelchair may have difficulty getting over, ceremony sites that are on grass (especially those on hills) or uneven terrain.

  3. Keep an eye out not just inside the building, but also for things outside the building as well, such as whether or not the venue has a paved path (with wheelchair access) from the parking area to the building.

  4. Your guests aren’t the only folks who need to be able to move around easily! Your vendors will also need to be able to move around the space to do their jobs well (photographers included - we carry a lot of heavy, bulky camera equipment). It’s important that whatever venue you choose is actually big enough to comfortably fit all guests and vendors and for those folks to all be able to move around easily between and around tables, etc. If I as a photographer can’t squeeze between two tables because they’re packed too tight, someone using a wheelchair or other mobility devices definitely won’t be able to.

  5. Speaking of seating, seats without arms, and ones with higher weight capacities, are considerably more accessible than smaller, more limiting chairs.

The Food & Drinks

Many couples take a lot of care with their food & drink choices already, but believe it or not, this can also be an accessibility issue!

Here some things to consider when it comes to food & drink accessibility at your wedding:

  1. Make sure to find out if any of your guests (and their plus ones!) have dietary restrictions that you need to accommodate for, such as celiac disease (needing gluten-free food), severe allergies (like a peanut allergy), vegetarian or vegan diets, etc.

  2. Work with your caterer to come up with a game plan that accommodates these dietary restrictions (you want to show equal hospitality to all your guests). If your caterer cannot accommodate a certain restriction, arrange to have a meal for that guest brought in from somewhere else at the same time dinner is being served for your other guests. You can delegate this task of course, but make sure to communicate with the person you’re delegating to and the wedding guest so that they know they’re being taken care of.

  3. If you’re serving food buffet-style at your wedding, make sure to clearly label all food and at minimum, ensure you’re indicating whether the food is GF, nut-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, or vegan. This will also save you (or more realistically your catering staff) a lot of unnecessary questions about the food.

  4. Consider having signature mocktail options in addition to signature cocktails for your wedding so that guests that either can’t drink or prefer not to can still celebrate with you. And if you’re doing a champagne toast, make sure sparkling water & sparkling juice are offered as alternative options.

The Sound & the environment

Not all disabilities are physical, and many folks, even those who don’t consider themselves disabled, have a difficult time with certain environmental factors at weddings. You may also have guests that are hard of hearing, or even deaf, and there are ways to help you accommodate them.

Here some things to consider when it comes to sound and environmental accessibility at your wedding:

  1. Consider working with your DJ or venue to ensure that there are mics available for you and your soon-to-be-spouse for your vows (not just your officiant). That way folks who are hard of hearing will have a better chance of being able to hear you. If you’re feeling extra fancy, you could have someone use a real-time transcription software so that your vows can be read by those who are deaf, and that way they are still included in the magic of your ceremony.

  2. Ask if your venue has a quiet room that you can set up for people who may be easily overstimulated and need some “down time” throughout the celebration day. A quiet room is a great way to accommodate nursing parents as well!

  3. If you have any guests who are sensitive to flashing lights (for instance, those who have epilepsy), make sure to let the DJ know ahead of time so that they can adjust the lighting they use during the dancing portion of the evening.

  4. If there will be kids at your wedding, having an area especially for them with activities, coloring books, etc. is a great way to make sure kids have a fun time at your wedding too!

Putting thought into these considerations may take a little more time up front, but putting in that effort will ensure that all of your guests feel welcomed, appreciated, and cared for, and that you’re future proofing your wedding in case you, your soon-to-be-spouse, or a close friend or family member have an unexpected need for accessibility on the wedding day!
